To train them to Serve Him…

This phrase is the essence of the great commission in Matthew 28:19-20~”Go therefore [fn] and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,”teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, [even] to the end of the age.” Amen. [fn],

The last statement in the AWANA pledge…the deepest desire of my heart hit me tonight as I shared my heart with the girls. We are called “to train them to serve Him”. Tonight I got a chance to share my testimony with my AWANA girls. I love them so much and God gave me the words and the tools to do so. Part of the reason why I love the 3rd and 4th grade girls is because I got saved when I was 9 years old. December 10, 1996 at Santee School. I used to think my testimony was boring because I prayed on a rainy day on my way to the bathroom and was a little disappointed when I didn’t see lights coming down from heaven or hear the angels singing as the Bible says they do each time someone trusts Christ as their Savior. Now I realize that the place I “got saved” was symbolic of my mission field, from 4th to 8th grade that was my mission field, then from 9th-12th it was at my high school, then Sea World, Olive Garden, and now NU. It was proof that we are called to be a light in the darkness, not called to be a light where there is already light shining… We each have our mission fields, the people and places we are called to pray for and witness to. Those people God has strategically placed in our lives so they may hear the good news of the gospel. Are we being faithful to share? Faithful in praying for them?

Tonight I got to share Jesus with my AWANA girls, I had the incredible chance to talk to a young lady who wanted to be saved and it was so precious. The gospel is so simple: Acts 16:31~ Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved. That’s it. period. God did all the work by sending His Son Jesus Christ to be the perfect sacrifice for our sins, He died on the cross and rose again 3 days later, making a way for us to go to Heaven, making a way for salvation.  I got to hear some of their testimonies and the moments when they first believed. Wow. What a MIGHTY God we serve, the way He works in our hearts never ceases to amaze me. For 3 years I struggled with the simplicity of the gospel. I’m sure my parents prayed daily for me to get it. And then just like that, I did, the Holy Spirit revealed His truth to me through Romans 10:9-10~that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

I don’t know what the future holds, but I know beyond a shadow of a doubt I have been called to “train them to serve Him” since before I got saved, when I began the AWANA program at 6 years old, God was already preparing this future, this desire, this hope and dream to bring Him glory with my life. He has taken me on a whirlwind of a journey since I believed on Him that December day…May I be ever faithful to fulfill his purpose and train them to serve Him.
