Today was a wonderful day… I had the opportunity to teach the Sunday School lesson and no matter how scared I get about whether I will do well or not God always takes over and ends up teaching me in the process!
Today we learned about Noah and the Ark. Simple enough story, I have heard it a million times; Noah built an ark, 2 of each animal went in, 7 of the ones that would need to be sacrificed… the world started over… the end.
Well… this week while preparing I learned A LOT more about the story. The world had gotten to a point where they did not acknowledge God at all, they were sinning left and right, without any conscience whatsoever. God told them, through Noah, that they would have 120 years to repent for their sin or He would send a rain. Well, the Bible talks about that up to that point the people had never seen rain and they didn’t know what it was. They laughed when Noah would tell them this because they had never seen rain and therefore it must not exist. When I think about it, how difficult must it have been for Noah and his family? He was the ONLY one believing God even though he had no idea what rain was. Also, I complain about waiting for God to fulfill His promise after a year or two… but if I had to wait 120 years for that promise to come true, would I still be faithful? I honestly don’t know…I would like to think so!
In Hebrews 11:7 it gives us a summary: By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
Another aspect of this story that I often read through quickly is the fact that when God told Noah to build the Ark, He told him to put ONE door… there were not several entrances… there was ONE. Once everyone was in the Ark, God shut the door. There was ONE way to be saved from the flood, and that was through the ONE door in the Ark. There is ONE way to Heaven, and that is through Jesus Christ, God’s Son. It says in John 14:6~Jesus said to them, “I am the Way, the truth and the Life, No one comes to the Father, except through Me”
Today there are a lot more people that follow God than there were in Noah’s time, but they chose not to repent and the punishment for sin was death. In Noah’s time they had to sacrifice sheep as a payment for their sin but today we can simply trust in the sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross because He is the perfect sacrifice.
In 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 it says, For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,
He is the ONLY way to be saved just like the one door on the Ark was the ONLY way to be saved from death before the flood. When Jesus comes back, it will be too late, the door will be shut and those who did not believe will not get to go to Heaven.
Acts 16:31 says, So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
I believe…do you?
